The Hydrogen Engine
The Hydrogen Engine
There are two ways for automobile engines to utilize hydrogen fuel. The first is a Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine or HICE. With HICE, hydrogen is injected directly into the combustion chamber and burnt as part of the fuel mixture. With slight modifications, many existing gasoline engines can be converted to run directly on hydrogen.
Another method of using hydrogen is through a fuel cell. With this method, hydrogen and oxygen is injected into a chamber where it reacts with a catalyst to produce electricity. They are very efficient and small fuel cells produce enough electricity to power electric cars. However fuel cells are very expensive to build.

Hydrogen Powered Engines - Development History
The first inventor of the hydrogen engine was Reverend W. Cecil James in 1820. His engine worked in a similar fashion as the steam engine, where he had used hydrogen to drive a piston. Although his design ran satisfactorily with a recorded revolution of 60 cycles per minute, but the explosions caused considerable noise. Forty years later, by 1860, many other gas engines had been developed by other inventors. Some of them had strange designs including double-acting versions where fuel was combusted on both sides of the piston. However none of them had any real commercial success with the main drawback being the excessive gas consumption.
With the discovery of gasoline in the 1860s and the invention of the carburetor in 1893, brought with it a new breakthrough in engineering. Gasoline engines could now be used both practically and safely, causing interest in other fuels to subside.
It was not until the 20th century that interest in hydrogen was again rekindled. It had found many uses including hydrogen filled airships, the hydrogen bomb, experimental hydrogen powered aircraft, and used most extensively in the rocket space program as rocket fuel.
In recent years, however, interest in hydrogen energy peaked at a feverish rate as concern for cleaner air and global warming fueled the search for an alternative energy source to replace fossil fuels. Various car manufacturers took to the challenge and began research and development of hydrogen powered cars.
The early 1990s saw the arrival of the Shelby Cobra, a freelance vehicle conversion project from gasoline to hydrogen power. Other more renowned car manufacturers such as Honda introduced their first prototype, the Honda FCX in 1999. A few years later in 2002, Mercedes Benz introduced their first generation of fuel cell vehicles. By 2004, Peugeot had joined this elite group and at the same time BMW’s Hydrogen Powered program produced the first breed of racecars to run on liquid hydrogen.

Today, hydrogen powered prototypes and concept cars are being developed by Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Fiat, General Motors, Ford, Peugeot, Chrysler and other less prominent manufacturers. Many are approaching commercial viability such as Honda to begin limited marketing of their latest fuel cell vehicle in 2008. General Motors has stated that it can produce a commercially viable model by 2010.

BMW 760Li & 760i Revealed with Newly Developed 6-Liter V12 Twin Turbo Engine
Features 400 kW (544 hp) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque
BMW has officially unveiled their new 760i and 760Li which are powered by a brand new twin-turbo V12 that produces 400 kW (544 hp) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque. Directly aimed at the 5.5-liter biturbo V12 Mercedes S600 with 380 kW (517 hp) and 829 Nm (612 lb-ft) of torque, the new BMW 760's have more horsepower but less torque.
The new all-aluminum 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 was designed from the ground up and features the latest technology such as high precision fuel injection, infinite double-VANOS camshaft adjustment, and a volume flow-controlled oil pump. BMW went to great length to specifically design the two exhaust gas turbochargers so they would provide unparalleled power and performance worthy of the wealthy owners who typically flock to this high-end model. Despite the fact that the car boasts more power than its predecessor, the new 760i actually features a 4.5 percent increase in fuel economy for an estimated rating of 12.9L/100km (21.9mpg UK / 18.2mpg US). In the terms of performance, 0-100 km/h comes in just 4.6 seconds while the top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).
Power flows to the rear wheels through a newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission that was designed to provide maximum gearshift comfort, sportiness and efficiency. By partnering with transmission specialist ZF, BMW was able to find a way to allow the car to use its highest gear at reduced engine speeds for improved fuel economy and smoothness.
Exterior styling differences between the 760i and 750i are minor but include the addition of V12 badges, a slightly revised grille, unique 19-inch light-alloy wheels, and special dual exhaust tips. Interior changes include new stainless-steel door guards with illumination, a leather wrapped instrument panel, an alcantara lined roof, and exclusive burr walnut wood trim.
As BMW's flagship model, the new 760's boast a high level of performance driving equipment such as dynamic damping control, dynamic driving control, speed sensitive steering, an air suspension, and the dynamic drive anti-roll stability system. Luxury features include GPS navigation, four-zone climate control, automatic soft close doors, cruise control with automatic braking, and park distance control. On the options list there is active cruise control, a night vision system with pedestrian detection, a heads-up display, a rearview camera, and high-beam assistant.

Software to Accurately Count Hairs
Scientist Developed Software to Accurately Count Hairs
Scientists from Sydney-based CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences developed a software program that can analyze the number of hairs there are in a patch of skin. The program is expected to help Australian researchers in testing just how effective different baldness treatments and depilatory creams are. The research and its results will be published in the November issue of the journal called Skin Research and Technology.
The Australian researchers created the program in collaboration with a British company. They said that with the new software it would be easier to develop hair removal creams by analyzing their effectiveness.
According to Dr Pascal Vallotton, an image analyst, previously scientists counted the hairs that survived after the hair removal creams manually. Such task was very difficult since a person could count a hair twice or miss it, ABC News reports.
"Image analysis offers distinct advantages because you always get the same counts and you get the right counts," said image analyst Dr Pascal Vallotton.
It is worth mentioning that the newly developed software relies on pictures that were captured by a small flatbed scanner pressed onto the skin. By applying a mathematical algorithm, the program maps out each hair according to its individual features, such as, for example, straightness.
Scientists developed the software in a way so it could make a distinction between hair and other features on the skin, including wrinkles, moles and small wounds.
Vallotton said that it is possible to say whether hair is growing quickly on slowly by comparing earlier and later images. In order to analyze the accuracy of their software, scientist asked help from their colleagues from neighboring laboratories. Researchers manually counted the hair on the skins of volunteers.
"We had twelve volunteers, mostly from neighboring labs, and we acquired images of hair before and after [treatment]," said the lead researcher.
After manually counting and marking each hair, scientist found that the results of the software were similar to those of the manual count. According to the lead researcher, the software may be used to test balding treatments or identifying substances besides hairs, which could be hard to image. For instance, the software could be used to identify how many neurons are in a cell sample.

(a) Not had a chance to review your résumé,
(b) Been instructed that this is really a great way to open an interview,
(c) Trying to see how you process a really broad open ended question,
(d) Trying to see what you focus on in your answer or

Sample Answer
Since I was 11, and I took apart my family's PC, I have been interested in pursuing a career as a PC technician and learning as much about computers at every opportunity. My work at Cornell in Computer Science not only gave me a great advanced background in hardware it showed me how much I like and flourish in a team environment, our CS team won the Northeast Technology Competition two years in a row for our innovate use of PC hardware. I guess it is not surprising given my athletic background and love of team sports. Especially in my C.S. classes, I grew to truly appreciate the value of new perspectives on solving old problems. I would look to apply my problem solving skills towards supporting your staff by providing hardware solutions and support so as to ultimately increase productivity and positively impact the bottom line. Solving problems, especially difficult ones, is what makes technology so exciting for me.

This is a hard question for many in IT and it is a hard question in detail. In answering show that you know the difference by describing the personal styles of leaders (typically visionary who see a purpose and generate value in work, imaginative, passionate, risk takers, unconventional) and managers (goal oriented focus, necessity focuses instead of desire, reactive instead of proactive) and work styles of leaders (innovative approached, motivate people with vision, generate shared ideals for the team) and managers (establish strategies and makes decisions by combining people and ideas, coordinate and balance opposing views, reach compromises and resolve conflicts). There are books that can be written on the distinction but the important thing is to recognize there are positive traits for an organization in both. We talked through a lot of issues and he explained that it was not a support or resources issue, but that he had other issues going on. We talked through ways to help him manage his time. Ultimately, he was late again. At that point I had to put him on probation and checked in with him daily to make sure he was staying on schedule. When that did not result in performance increases, we had to terminate him. I felt it was an unfortunate incident because we hate to lose good people. This is a hard question for many in IT and it is a hard question in detail. As with all questions answer honestly but indicate you understand the difference and want to develop positive qualities of both managers and leaders.
